George E. Gumm

George Edward Gumm, 91, of Maryville, Missouri, passed from this life on Tuesday, April 2, 2024, at Mosaic Life Care, Maryville, Missouri, with family at his side.

George was born on February 24, 1933, in Tindall, Missouri, he was a resident of Maryville for the past 67 years.  George graduated from the Spickard Missouri high school and had attended Northwest Missouri State University in Maryville.   He was a retired business owner.

He was a member and attended St. Gregory’s Barbarigo Catholic Church, Maryville.

He enjoyed golf and was a Maryville Country Club member for many years, and he liked all sports.  His Spickard high school basketball team once played against the Harlem Globetrotters.    He was the team coach, along with his wife, Virginia, for the Citizen State Banksters softball team in Maryville for 12 years, and helped lead them twice to National Championship games, winning once, and 9 State Championships. George had also coached the NWMSU girls’ softball team for 2 years.  In 2023, by unanimous decision, George and Virginia were inducted into the Missouri Softball Hall of Fame.  He also liked to spend time at the lake.

George was preceded in death by his parents, William Paris and Nora (Kincade) Gumm, and his step siblings, Gerald Robert Gumm, and Otto J. Gumm, Audrey Gumm Brown, and Opal Gumm Harrington, and a grandchild, Anthony Joseph Gumm.

On June 4, 1957, George was united in marriage to Virginia Lee Watkins, at Trenton, Missouri, she survives of the home.

Other survivors include his 3 children, Ed (Katy) Gumm, Maryville, Missouri, Teresa Gumm, Lenexa, KS, and Sandy (Brandon) Gumm, St. Joseph, Missouri, his grandchildren, Robert (Merlin) Gumm, Brandon (Abbie) Gumm, Jacqueline Langford, Geordon Gumm, Jayden Gumm, Zaylee Langford, and Zara Langford.

Mass of Christian Burial will be at 11:00 AM, Saturday, April 6, 2024, at St. Gregory’s Barbarigo Catholic Church, Maryville, Missouri.  The burial will follow in the St. Patrick’s Cemetery, also of Maryville.

There will be a parish and family Rosary at 5:30 PM, on Friday, April 5, 2024, at St. Gregory’s Barbarigo Catholic Church, the visitation will continue until 8:00 PM.

Services are under the direction of the Bram Funeral Home, Maryville, Missouri.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are suggested to the New Nodaway Humane Society, or the St. Gregory’s Barbarigo Catholic Church.
