Dwight T. ‘Max’ Maxwell died January 11, 2019, at Oak Pointe of Maryville. He was born August 25, 1937, in Manhattan, KS to Bessie Jones Maxwell and Dwight L. Maxwell.
He graduated from Central High School in Kansas City in 1955 and the University of Missouri Kansas City in 1959 with a BS in Geology/Geography. He earned a PhD in Geology from Montana State University in 1965.
His career as a Geology Professor spanned 35 years and included teaching at UMKC and the University of Louisiana at Monroe before arriving at Northwest Missouri State University in 1971 where he served as Chairman of the Geology/Geography Department before retiring in 2000.
He married Marge Cargo in 1965 and Sandra Rose Smith in 1979.
He is survived by his wife Sandra, children Heather(Troy) Greenfield, Pete(Heather Lynn) Malmberg, sister Alice(Richard) Shimel, three grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
‘Max’ was a longtime member of the Maryville Rotary Club and the Maryville Garden Club. He was also the Faculty Advisor for the Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority at the University and was active in several other national organizations.
His varied interests included a love of all things outdoors, especially public parks and gardens. He was locally known for his midwestern landscaping and ornamental gardening expertise.
Dr. Maxwell has been cremated under the direction of the Bram-Danfelt Funeral Home, Maryville, MO.
Memorial services will be at 10:30 AM, Saturday, January 19, 2019, at the First United Methodist Church, Maryville, MO.
