James R. Campbell

James R. "Doc" Campbell, 77, of Elmo, MO, passed away Thursday, August 26, 2010 at the Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, NE.

Doc was born on December 16, 1932 to Fred and Geraldine James Campbell in Elmo, MO. He was a lifelong member of the Elmo United Methodist Church, and involved in many activities including Boy Scouts where he achieved the level of Eagle Scout. Doc was a graduate of Elmo High School, and married Frances Hull on August 10, 1952.

Doc proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine Corps. He received the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Medal, National Defense Ribbon and was awarded the Purple Heart Medal for injuries sustained during enemy actions on September 16, 1951.

Following his years in military service, Doc graduated from the University of Missouri-Columbia with a Bachelor of Science in Agriculture and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degrees in 1960. He and Frances opened a large veterinarian practice in Elmo, which he operated for 42 years before retiring in 2001.
In 2004, Doc was inducted into the Nodaway County Agricultural Hall of Fame.

Doc was an active member of the Bradley-Carver American Legion Post 492, Elmo, 40&8, and the Elmo Community Betterment Committee. He was a lifetime member of both the Missouri and American Veterinary Medical Associations.

Survivors include three daughters, Anita (Ed) McCumber, Ashland, NE; Teresa (Donald Jr.) Fast, Burlington Junction, MO; and Linda (Steve) Kirsch, Burlington Junction, MO; two sisters, Barbara Cable, Fort Walton Beach, FL and Joyce Livengood, Tarkio, MO; nine grandsons, two granddaughters, six great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Frances, and his parents, Fred and Geraldine Campbell.

The funeral service will be held at 10:30 A.M. Monday, August 30, 2010 at the Elmo United Methodist Church with Rev. Connie Eighmy officiating. Burial will be held immediately following at the LeMar Cemetery, Elmo, MO. Military rites at the cemetery will be conducted by the Missouri Military Honors Detail, and members of the Bradley-Carver American Legion Post 492, Elmo. Visitation will be held from 6-8:00 P.M. Sunday, August 29, 2010 at the Bram-Danfelt Funeral Home. Maryville, MO.
