Joyce N. Redding

Joyce Nadine Redding passed away August 21, 2010, at Parkdale Manor Care Center at the age of 83. She was born to Otho L. and Stella Irene (McLaughlin) Mathes on a farm near Hills, Iowa on April 10, 1927. She graduated from University High School in Iowa City and worked as a switchboard operator for the telephone company in Iowa City, where she met her future husband.

She married Merle Melvin (Mike) Redding on December 30, 1947, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, IA. They lived in Clarksville, IA; Decorah, IA; Waterloo, IA; Mediapolis, IA; Devils Lake, ND; Carthage, IL; New London, IA; Chariton, IA; Knoxville, IA; and spent 13 winters in Apache Junction, AZ. Mike passed away in October 1997, a few months before their 50th wedding anniversary.

Joyce moved to Maryville, MO, in 1999 and enjoyed many years at Homestead Cooperative. She was a long time member of the United Methodist Church. Her hands were always busy with crafts, needlework, sewing, and quilting.

Joyce is survived by three daughters and sons-in-law: Ellen and Les Kaler of Maryville, Jan Redding and Bob Smith of Boulder, CO, and Susan and Duane Meindertsma of San Clemente, CA; three grandchildren: Arica Kaler of Maryville, Jessica Meindertsma and Brad Meindertsma of San Diego, CA; and one sister, Norma Wells of Iowa City, IA. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Mike, a brother Robert William “Bill” Mathes, and three sisters, Mary Wilma Fountain, Jeanne Schooley, and Doris Maxine Mathes.

Mrs. Redding has been cremated under the direction of the Bram-Danfelt Funeral Home.

Memorial graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M., Friday, August 27, 2010 at the Graceland Cemetery in Knoxville, Iowa, Pastor Diane Olson Schroeder will be the officiant. A register book is available at the funeral home.
