Marzella Houghton

Maryville - Marzella Clary Houghton, 98, of Maryville, MO passed from this life on Thursday, June 3, 2010 at the Village Care Center, Maryville, MO.

She was born at Sheridan, MO on July 10, 1911 and moved to Maryville as an infant.

In March 1930 she married Floyd B. Houghton who preceded her in death in 1993. She was also preceded in death by her parents, Mr & Mrs. Luther Clary a brother, James Edward, and son F.B. Houghton, Jr, Sept. 25, 2009.

She is survived by her daughter-in-law Frances "Fran" Houghton, a grandson Kevin Houghton & wife Megan, and three great granddaughters, Tyler, Lauren, and Jeannine Marzella.

Mrs. Houghton was engaged in public education for many years of her adult life. She graduated in 1928 from Maryville High School when she was judged "Maryvillian Queen". She held a B.S. and M.A. Degree from NWMSU & had done graduate work at Missouri University. She was also a Learning Disability Specialist. She taught at Eugene Field Elementary School for 29 years in the 3rd grade & was in charge of the Learning Lab there for 4 years.

She was a lifelong member of the First Christian Church in Maryville having joined the church in 1920 at the age of 9. She was a member of the Retired Teachers Association in Maryville & State Retired Teachers Association. She was a member of Chapter L, P.E.O., Delta Kappa Gamma Society, Sigma Sigma Sigma Alumnas, of which she had received her 50 year Golden Violet Pin & the 75 year Sigma Sigma Sigma pin, several bridge clubs, and Club of Faculty Women. She was selected as the Grand Marshall of the 2002 NWMSU Homecoming Parade.

Mrs. Houghton has traveled extensively with her husband having visited 25 countries. In 1986 she & her husband were awarded the Turret Award by the NWMSU in recognition of their outstanding service for the University, she taught there for over 28 years.

Funeral Services will be at 10:00 AM on Saturday, June 5, 2010, at the First Christian Church, 201 W. 3rd St., Maryville, MO, with the Rev. Dale Stewart, officiating. Final Resting Place will be in the Oak Hill Cemetery, Maryville. There are no formal visitations planned, the body will be at the church at 9:00 AM.

Memorial Donations may be made to the SSM Hospice of NW Missouri, 1912 S. Main St, Maryville, MO; First Christian Church, or the Sigma Sigma Sigma Sorority at NWMSU.
