Beulah Arlene Hemenway, 91, of Rogers, AR, and formerly of Maryville, MO, passed from this life peacefully and in her bed on August 3, 2016, in Rogers.
Beulah was born on February 28, 1925, on the family farm near Merrill, IA. Her parents were Anna and Henry Schultz.
She attended kindergarten through 8th grade at Stanton Township #4 School, then graduated from Lemars Iowa High School, while living with relative during the week.
She obtained her Bachelors of Arts degree from Westmar College in Lemars, IA in 1950, and started teaching 5th grade at Ottawa, IA, until 1953.
During the summer of 1953, she left teaching for Sioux City, IA and participated in Summer Stock Theater at the Black Hills playhouse within Custer State Park run by the University of South Dakota. In 1954, she cared for her ailing Mother and began attending Nursing school at the Methodist Hospital in Sioux City, IA. She obtained her RN Degree in nursing in 1956.
Beulah met Henry Hemenway during her nursing school graduation party. Henry was attending with his cousin who was a good friend of Beulah’s. She continued caring for her Mother while working at the Sioux City Hospital. She set up the pediatric nursing program at the hospital.
Beulah and Henry Hemanway were married on the 26th of May, 1957.
They continued to live in Sioux City until 1960, but would live summers at Mount Rushmore National Park, where Henry was a Park Ranger.
Their son Martin was born on January 15, 1960, and they moved to Bellevue, NE, where Beulah substitute taught and gave piano lessons, and Henry taught high school.
In 1962, Beulah took a RN position at Clarkson Hospital in Omaha, NE, to enable Henry to finish his doctoral degree. She also taught at the Lincoln General School on Nursing from 1967-68.
In 1968, the family moved to Maryville after Henry accepted an education department position at NWMSU.
In Maryville, Beulah taught piano and took care of the home. She was active in the First United Methodist Church, and during the 1980’s was one the Nodaway County Health Center Nurses. She was also an Ombudsman at the Golden Living Health facility. She enjoyed knitting, reading, music, and her grandchildren.
Beulah was preceded in death by her brother, Marvin Shultz of Merrill, IA, and her husband Henry on January 12, 2016.
She leaves behind her son, Martin Hemenway, daughter in law, Joan Collins Hemenway, grandson Collin Hemenway, and granddaughter, Jullian Hemenway, all of Rogers, AR; 3 nephews, 1 niece of the Schultz family.
Beulah has been cremated under the direction of the Bram-Danfelt Funeral Home, Maryville.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM, on September 3, 2016, at the First United Methodist Church, Maryville, MO. Joint burial services for Beulah and Henry will follow the service at the Miriam Cemetery, Maryville, MO.
The family will receive friends for one hour prior to services at the church.
