Maryville, MO -- John “Donald” Fisher, age 89, died Saturday morning, May 28, 2016, at the Golden Living Center in Maryville following a battle with cancer.
He leaves behind his wife of 68 years, Eileen (Eckstein) Fisher; daughter, Donna (J. Michael) Buffa of Mesquite, NV, and daughter, Dianne Fisher, of Roeland Park, KS. He also leaves brother and sister-in-laws: Bernard and Verla (Boots) Eckstein, Jerry and Susie Eckstein; Robert Eckstein; Clarice Holtman, and Ruth Eckstein; loving nieces, nephews, and many close friends.
Born and raised in Maryville, MO, Don was the son of the late John and Bess (Wallace) Fisher. He was also preceeded in death by his son, Gerald Dean Fisher, and brother, Wallace Fisher.
In his early years, Don liked to hunt, fish and trap. He joined the Army during WWII and was stationed at Guam and Leyte, Philippines, where he worked in a instrument repair shop, guarded Japanese soldiers, and went on tour playing competitive pool for the Army.
After returning home from the war, Don and Eileen opened the Maryville Recreation Club where he could continue to play and share his love for the game. He attended the Countryside Christian Church, Maryville.
Don will probably be most remembered for his development of “Iris Lane,” a 5-acre garden displaying over 10,000 irises, poppies, and a unique variety of trees. He opened his land up to the public so all could enjoy its beauty. Though not a formally educated man, late in life, Don went on to surprise many with his new-found love for writing poetry. He has written over 1200 poems---on topics covering love, nature, the War, friendships, family, and humorous chronicals of life in a small town.
