William I. Hann

September 21, 1929 — May 11, 2016

William Irvin (Bill) Hann, 86, of Burlington Junction, MO, passed away on Wednesday, May 11, 2016, at a hospital in Indianapolis, IN.

Bill was born on September 21, 1929, in Maryville, MO. His parents were John Ramey and Wilda Lillian Jones Hann. He had lived most of his life in this area.

Bill attended Kansas University beginning in 1951, where he became a lifelong fan of the KU Jayhawks. His favorite story was about the time he rounded the corner of a building on campus and ran into Wilt Chamberlains belt buckle. From that day on, he was a dedicated Jayhawks basketball fan. Bill moved back to Burlington Junction in 1957 and started his lifelong career teaching math. Upon consolidation to West Nodaway, he continued teaching for almost 50 years. During those year he earned his master's and spent one year as West Nodaway Principal but decided to go back to teaching his love of math. He was also a girls basketball coach and eventually a basketball referee as well as a bus driver. He also worked many long hours in various filling stations around Burlington Junction.

As a teacher, he had the freedom to spend many summers in the Ozarks where he built a home and boat for his family to enjoy and create many memories.

He also loved flying and although he took flying lessons, he eventually turned to flying model airplanes. That love he shared with his son John and continued for many years.

One of Bill's greatest loves was the Rocky Mountain National Park, He spent many vacations and summers there with his family and instilled a love for the mountains in every family member. He said on numerous occasions he wished he had known about Estes Park when he first started teaching.

And anyone who knew Bill knew he was a diehard Democrat to the very end. He would argue with anyone who chose to listen or argue with him. But Bill was always right.

However, his greatest love was his children and grandchildren and he protected them and watched out for them his entire life. He always said "I love you and watch out for the nuts on the road". We are watching Dad!

He married Donna Jean (Egbert) Hann on March 15, 1952. They spent 53 years together before her death in January, 2005.

He is survived by his children, Beth (Mike) Walker, Burlington Junction, MO, John (Connie) Hann, Indianapolis, IN, Kathy (Jon) Engstrand, Braddyville, IA, Bill (Shelley) Hann, Aubrey, TX, Jane (Steve) Nauman, McKinney, TX; his brother, Richard (Meredith) Hann, Lawrence, KS; his sister, Katherine (Bob) Sawyer, Maryville, MO; 13 grandchildren, 21, great grandchildren, and many friends.
