Velda Mary (Cochran)Barnett was born April 24, 1919 to Galen George and Susan Hazel (Allen) Cochran in St. Marys, Kansas, one of 6 children. She graduated from Hume, MO High School in 1937 and worked in various jobs in the Kansas City, MO area.
She married Alva Clifton Barnett on August 21, 1943 in Stockton, CA before Mr. Barnett went to serve in the Army Air Corps in World War 2. They moved to Hopkins, MO in 1948 to own and operate Barnett’s Hy-Klas Grocery until they closed the business in 1978. Their daughter, Maryann (Barnett) Daniels was born December, 1947, and son Terry Allen Barnett was born in March, 1949. In 1956, they built a new home on 20 acres south of Hopkins which they called the Palomino Twenty. Their third child, Kevin Lane Barnett was born in December, 1958.
Velda enjoyed being a homemaker and taking care of her family. She was a great cook and a wonderful hostess and always loved welcoming family and friends into her home. She was active in the Wray Memorial Methodist Church of Hopkins and the Hilltop Club, and later the Maryville Methodist Church and PEO.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alva, in 2009. She is survived by her 3 children, 10 grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
Services will be held at Bram-Danfelt Funeral Home in Maryville, MO, Thursday, November 29, 2012 at 2:00 p.m. Burial following in the Memorial Gardens, Maryville, MO.
