Lavern (Vern) Dale Hughes 74, of Maryville, MO passed away Thursday, November 17, 2011 in Maryville. Vern was born on December 11, 1936 in Hopkins, MO to Dale Lewis and Edith Venita (Heggs) Hughes both of Bedford, IA.
Lavern attended country school, and graduated from Bedford High in 1955 along with his two sisters Joyce Ann and Judith Kay. Lavern was in 4-H, showed calves, and attended FFA through high school. Vern worked for various farmers, rented 80 acres and built up a 10 cow herd.
After graduation he took Basic Training in the National Guard. He then worked at the Cudahay Plant in Bedford, IA. He attended and graduated Clarinda Junior College in 1956.
In August 1958, Laverne married JoAnne Morgan in Clarinda, IA. He attended Iowa State University and graduated in 1960. He taught high school vocational agriculture at Scranton, IA for one year. He was then employed by Farm Credit Administration in Omaha, NE and Ottumwa, IA. Lavern later opened and managed a Production Credit Field Office in Chariton, IA., and purchased a farm in 1966.
In August of 1970, Lavern married Donna Massey of Derby, IA. He became Vice-President and loan officer of the Corydon State Bank at Corydon, IA. Five years later, the bank sold and Vern then operated a concrete block plant for a year.
In 1977, he was employed by the Iowa Department of Revenue in Des Moines, IA., as an agent, auditor and supervisor of all corporation audits outside of Iowa. He kept his Chariton farm for several years, but lived and worked in Des Moines.
In 1992, he sold the last of his farm ground and acquired a mobile home park East of Des Moines.
In 1996, he sold the park, retired and moved to Maryville, MO. Lavern built a four-plex and remodeled three houses in Maryville, where he was fortunate to make many friends. In 2000, Lavern build a new home in Maryville. He became active in the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie # 3669 where he held most offices and was Secretary for the past five years. He enjoyed golfing, dancing and spending time with his Eagle family, where he found a wonderful love and partner in Betty Wiederholt.
Vern was proceded in death by his parents, and a daughter, Nancy Ann.
Vern is survived by two sisters, Joyce Ann (Charlie) Cervantes, Maryville, MO, and Judith Kay (Lynn) Schoening, Round Rock, TX; his nieces and nephews, Anthony (Alisande) Cervantes, Topeka, KS; Lisa (Mike) Pekish, San Pedro, CA, Amber Cervantes and son, Ronald Purnell, Kansas City, MO; Lynnette Rabb and son Spencer Schoening of Georgetown , TX and daughters Tiffany(Matt) Stillwell and sons Hudson, Truman, and Wyatt, Austin, TX and Nicole (Christopher) Thies and daughter Dilynn and son Oliver, Austin Texas.
Since February 2011, Vern has fought a courageous battle with lung cancer.
Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM, Monday November 21, 2011 at the Bram Danfelt Funeral Home in Maryville, MO. Burial will be in the Miriam Cemetery, Maryville.
The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 PM Sunday, November 20, at the funeral home.
Memorials are suggested to SSM Hospice of NW Missouri or to the St. Gregory’s Catholic Church, both of Maryville, MO.
