Lester James Workman, Sr.

Lester James Workman, Sr. 85 of Pickering, MO. passed away Tuesday, February 1, 2011 at the Heartland Regional Medical Center in St. Joseph, MO.

Lester was born in Maryville, MO. on March 4, 1925 to Charles Oris and Lillian Cook Workman, they preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by his brother, Leland Workman.

He graduated from Horace Mann High School in Maryville before joining the U.S. Navy. A WW II veteran, he served aboard the heavy cruiser, U.S.S. Salt Lake City. His ship was damaged in the Aleutian Islands then repaired in the Oakland CA. area before sailing for Guadalcanal. He was near the island of Iwo Jima, during the flag-raising on Mount Suribachi, then to Tokyo Bay for the surrender signing ending the war.

Lester was a lifelong northwest Missouri Farmer.

His memberships include the Wilcox United Methodist Church, Wilcox, MO., past Commander and member of the Rolla Dicks American Legion Post 315, Burlington Junction, MO, VFW Post 1668, St. Joseph, MO. He was the Past Commander of the 4th District of the American Legion, and past president of the Nodaway County Farm Bureau. He was also a member of the U.S.S. Salt Lake City Association.

On October 22, 1949, Lester married Daisy Ruth Schenkel in Council Bluffs, IA, she survives of the home.

Other survivors include two sons, Charles Eugene (Patricia) Workman, Murray, KY, and Lester James (Darla) Workman, Jr. Maryville, MO., and two brothers, Loren O, (Jo Ann) Workman, Upland, CA, and William Karol (Ann) Workman, Omaha, NE. 5 grandchildren, David (Candi) Workman, and Jennifer Workman, and Todd, Biloxi, MS, Thomas (Denise) Workman, Maryville, MO. Christina Workman, Omaha, NE, and Sarah Beth Workman, Maryville, MO. Six great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be at 2 P.M. Saturday, February 5, 2011 at the Bram-Danfelt Funeral Home, Maryville, burial will be in the Workman Chapel Cemetery, Pickering, MO. The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 P.M. Friday at the funeral home.

Military rites at the cemetery will be conducted by the Rolla Dicks American Legion Post 315, Burlington Junction, MO.

Memorials are suggested to the Wilcox Missouri United Methodist Church, or to the Workman Chapel Cemetery.
