Richard George Collins

Richard George Collins 82, Hopkins, MO, passed away peacefully Thursday, January 6, 2010 at his home with his family at his side.

Born on June 7, 1928 in Monticello, MN to George William and Mary L. Peterson Collins, they preceded him in death. Richard was a farmer and along with his Father, milked and raised a purebred Jersey cow herd in Wright County, MN. He played high school football and remained an avid football fan. He had attended the University of Minnesota.

After serving his county in the U.S. Army in WW II and receiving the WW II Victory Medal and the Army of Occupation Medal Japan, he was united in marriage to Kathleen May Robinson. They were married on December 27, 1950 in Monticello, MN.

Following the death of his Father, Richard and Kathleen purchased a farm west of Hopkins and moved there in 1966. They raised their children, farmed and raised hogs and beef cattle. Richard was a member of the Wray Memorial United Methodist Church, Hopkins, MO, was a 4-H project leader, and an Honorary FFA Chapter Farmer. Richard liked to hunt and be outdoors. He especially loved hunting stories.

Besides farming, Richard had worked as a carpenter with Woodruff-Arnold, and had worked at NWMSU, both of Maryville, MO.

Left to mourn his passing is his wife, Kathleen May, of the home. His children, son, James (Carolyn) Collins, Bedford, IA, daughters, Carmen Larabee, Maryville, MO, Georgia (the late Marvin) Miller, Lenox, IA, Joan (Martin) Hemenway, Rogers, AR, and Carol (Allen) Hersh, Conception Junction, MO. A sister, Jane Cornelius, Monticello, MN, and 8 grandchildren, Jeremiah Larabee, Jedidiah Larabee, Brandie Miller, Suzanne Miller Sulzer, Cody Hersh, Jacklyn Hersh, Collin Hemenway, and Jullian Hemenway, 2 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews also survive.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M. Monday, January 10, 2011 at the Wray Memorial United Methodist Church, Hopkins, MO. Burial will be in the Shearer Cemetery, Braddyville, IA. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services Monday at the church. Military honors will be conducted at the cemetery by the Sergy American Legion Post #98, Clarinda, IA.
